Surveying Terminology


UNITS OF MEASURE:

Acre - 43,560 square feet

Square Acre - 208.71 feet x 208.71 feet; commonly referred to as 210' x 210'.

Chain - 66 feet

Rod (Pole, Perch) - 16.5 linear feet.


SURVEYING TERMINOLOGY:

CAD - Computer Aided Drafting

GIS - Geographic Information System - process of displaying mapped information, i.e. utilities, roads, flood plains, communities, etc. on one drawing.

GPS - Global Positioning System - process of taking measurements using satellite.

Metes & Bounds - Survey whose property lines are defined by bearings and distances.

P.I. - Point of Intersection

P.O.B. - Point of Beginning

Boundary Survey - a property survey to create, re-establish, mark, and define boundaries of a tract of land.

Subdivision - the division of a tract of land into two or more parcels.

Planimetric Survey - a survey which horizontally locates both man-made structures and natural features.

Contour Survey - a survey which shows the elevation and configuration of the ground.

Topographic Survey - a survey which combines planimetric and contour surveys.
